Trend Alert: Be slouchy chic
Designers Saaksha & Kinni, known for creating silhouettes that don’t suffocate, say that the trend was catapulted into the forefront by the designing twins – Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The duo breaks it down for you: “Slouchy chic is associated with oversized shirts and blouses – usually tucked into trousers or skirts. Sometimes worn two sizes larger, it’s all about comfort and proportion.”
OVERSIZE WITH CAUTION
The slouchy chic trend is an artful blend of oversized and fitted pieces. Amiin dates it to the ‘90s Bollywood. And now it’s Bollywood divas like Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone with their airport look who are giving it popular currency. Saaksha & Kinni advise easing into it by pairing your regular fit jeans with a collared shirt that is one size bigger than your regular size. Tuck the shirt into the jeans while keeping some overlay and pair with flats and oversized sunnies.
It’s a mix of comfortable cuts with figure-flattering shapes. Amiin suggests, “Use the oversized pieces to hide the bits you would rather not display and the fitted pieces to showcase your best assets.” For instance, if you have great legs, opt for a fitted skirt and slouchy shirt, and if you have an ample bust or svelte waistline do the reverse: fitted shirt, slouchy pants. Amiin advises against wearing two slouchy pieces together – there needs to be something fitted to anchor the loose-oversized pieces.
CALLING SLOUCHY MEN
Saaksha & Kinni say that while both women and men can do slouchy chic, it’s definitely seen less on the latter. But luxury menswear brands such as Vetements, Balenciaga and now Louis Vuitton are offering oversized styles for men. Amiin says that such cuts don’t so much exaggerate the physique as they obliterate it. “It’s not a celebration of the Ken Doll, creatinine-fuelled Love Island look. It’s a repudiation of it,” she says. According to her, there are tangible benefits to wearing oversized clothes. “For one, they allow for more movement and air circulation, which means that, in many situations, they’re a lot more comfortable. Aesthetically, they’re wonderfully unfussy and transmit an air of sartorial confidence. And, yes, there’s also a luxurious feel to them,” she says. Slouch your way in to style.
